Care Coordination for Dense Breasts

Dense breast tissue, as well as cancer, appears white on a mammogram. Thus the presence of dense tissue may overlap and hide cancer. When you have dense breasts and need a comprehensive breast care plan, your mammogram at Spectrum Imaging is step one.

How Spectrum Supports Women with Dense Breasts:

  • Annual Screening Mammography
  • Reports include breast density level
  • Coordination of continued care when needed

Prioritizing Women's Health in Brighton

Prioritizing women’s health, especially mammograms, is essential because early detection saves lives. Here’s why mammograms should be a top priority for you and the women in your life:

Early Detection

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, but when caught early, the survival rate is nearly 99%. Mammograms can detect cancer years before symptoms appear, making treatment more effective and less invasive.

Protecting Your Health & Peace of Mind

Many women put their health last due to busy schedules, but prioritizing routine screenings ensures you stay in control of your well-being. Mammograms offer reassurance and help detect any concerns before they become serious.

You May Not Have Symptoms

Breast cancer doesn’t always present with noticeable symptoms, such as lumps or pain. A mammogram can reveal changes in breast tissue long before they can be felt, making it a powerful, life-saving tool.

Personalized Risk Awareness

Your personal and family history affects your risk level. Regular screenings help you stay informed about your breast health and allow doctors to monitor any changes over time.

A Healthy You Benefits Everyone

Taking care of your health isn’t just for you—it’s for your loved ones too. Being proactive ensures you can continue being there for the people who depend on you.

Bottom line? Prioritizing mammograms means prioritizing your life, your future, and your health.

FAQs About Women's Health in Brighton

At Spectrum, we offer screening mammography, Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), bone density scans (DEXA), pelvic ultrasound, and other diagnostic procedures.

Our specialized radiologists recommend annual mammography screenings to begin at age 40. It’s best to discuss your personal and family history, as well as risk factors, with your doctor to determine your screening plan.

A bone density test (DEXA scan) is the standard imaging for detecting osteoporosis, most often recommended for women over 65 or younger women with additional risk factors.

Yes. Pelvic ultrasounds are commonly used to evaluate conditions like ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis. Other advanced imaging can also provide fertility evaluations.

Routine screening mammograms do not require a referral. As long as you have a relationship with a primary care physician, you can call us directly to schedule this exam at any time. We will send the report to your doctor after.

All other exams require a referral from your doctor before it can be scheduled at our imaging center.

If results show something unusual, your provider may recommend additional imaging, biopsy, or referral to a specialist. Our imaging center will provide a quick and thorough report to your physician to ensure timely care.

Ultrasound and MRI are generally safe during pregnancy. X-ray and CT scans should be avoided unless medically necessary. Always inform your imaging center if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.

For a mammogram, avoid deodorants or powders on the day of the exam, as they can affect imaging. For pelvic ultrasounds, you may be asked to drink water beforehand to fill the bladder for better visualization. Your imaging team can provide preparation details about your specific study if needed.

Dense Breasts FAQs

If you have dense breast tissue, ask your provider if a supplemental screening is right for you.

Only a mammogram read by a radiologist can determine breast density. Your density level will be included in your mammography report from Spectrum.

Denser breasts contain more fibroglandular than fatty tissue. There are four categories of breast density:

(A) Entirely fatty

(B) Scattered fibroglandular tissue

(C) Heterogeneously dense tissue

(D) Extremely dense tissue

Women with heterogeneously or extremely dense tissue have “dense breasts.”

Dense Breast Tissue | Brighton Women's Health

Regardless of density, the primary tool for breast cancer screening is an annual mammogram. This is for women age 40 or older at average risk of cancer. However, those with dense breasts may benefit from supplemental screenings including breast ultrasound and/or breast MRI. Through our partnership with Platte Valley Hospital, if your mammography report indicates that you have dense breasts and require further imaging, a breast care coordinator is assigned to your case and will assist in any additional care required.
